Grand Teton Relay
Ryan and Heather Johnson are excited to have their 6th year of the Grand Teton Relay on Friday, August 19th. Ryan and Heather live in Draper, Utah with their 4 munchkins. Ryan is originally from Jackson Hole, where his family still resides. They have always had a love for this area and the beauty surrounding it.
Ryan and Heather are both very active and enjoy being in the mountains and running relays. In 2007, Ryan was running a relay with some friends in southern Utah, and started thinking how great it would be to bring his friends to run here and experience the beauty he had been enjoying when coming home to visit family. So after talking it over with his wife and working together to figure out the course and the many details, the Grand Teton Relaystarted in the summer of 2011.
The Grand Teton Relay consists of 6 man teams or 12 man teams who run a total of 176.8 miles between 24-35 hours. This year they have over 120 teams. The teams range from hometown locals here in Ashton to runners from New York City this year. They are really excited how the race has grown country wide over the last 5 years. Heather feels this is an awesome race and experience because it brings so many people together to enjoy the beauty around and work together. She said that in some cases it’s a triumph for some new runners just to show up and try. Running the Grand Teton Relay means, “you will be forever a part of the GTR TRIBE.” They consider all who run family and call those members a part of their “Tribe”.
Throughout the course the Grand Teton Relay goes through some communities, beginning here in Ashton at North Fremont High School. At each community they are in they do some sort of service to give back to the community. Here in Ashton they have all the participants bring canned goods to be donated to the N.F. Food Pantry. Last year they donated over 4,000 pounds of food to our N.F. Food Pantry. This is very appreciated in our community!
We at the Ashton Area Chamber of Commerce appreciate the Grand Teton Relay and their participants for the commerce they bring into our businesses for the short time they are here. We welcome them to our community and hope that we can continue to serve them and their needs as they enjoy the beautiful area that we are lucky to call home.
